NYAFF '08: King Naresuan 2 third in Audience Award poll

The New York Asian Film Festival is over and co-organizer Brian of Asian Cinema - While on the Road has tallied the Audience Award votes, with M.C. Chatrichalerm Yukol's King Naresuan 2 taking third place in the polling.

The favorite was Yosuke Fujita's Fine Totally Fine, followed by Takashi Yamazaki's Always: Sunset on Third Street 2. The top five is rounded out by Kang Woo-suk's Public Enemy Returns and Johnnie To's Sparrow.

Southeast Asian films typically have smaller audiences at NYAFF, compared to the Japanese, Korean and Chinese/Hong Kong movies, so for a Thai film to rank in the top five in the Audience Award I think is a remarkable achievement.

Worth noting is that for the first time, the New York Asian Film Festival had a juried competition, and a Southeast Asian film figured in those prizes too, with Indonesian director Joko Anwar's Kala sharing kudos for Best Visual Achievement with M by Lee Myung-Se.

The Grand Prize went to Sad Vacation by Shinji Aoyama. Honorable Mentions for Best Ensemble Cast when to Sparrow and Hitoshi Yazaki's Strawberry Shortcakes. The Outstanding Achievement prize went to Koji Wakamatsu for United Red Army and the Best Debut Feature went to Ryo Nakajima for This World of Ours.
